Prof. V.S. Tomar
joined as founder Vice-Chancellor, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi
Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior on 21st Aug., 2008. Born on 1st July 1946,
graduated with distinction and with first position at M.Sc. (Ag.)
JNKVV, Jabalpur, Ph.D. (Soil Science) from G.B. Pant University of
Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (1973) and Post Doctorate Fellow
at the International Rice Research Institute, Manila, Phillipines
(1978 - 80). He joined as Assistant Professor in 1972 and Associate
Professor in 1977, Department of Soil Science GBPUA&T, Pantnagar
as Professor in 1985 JNKVV, Jabalpur and thereafter served as Dean
of the College, Director Extension, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, Director
Instructions and Director Research, JNKVV, Jabalpur till his superannuation
in June, 2008.
Prof. Tomar distinguished himself in carrying out basic and applied
research in the field of water management, scheduling of irrigation,
designed and developed lysimeter / microlysimeter to measure ET, soil
–water-plant relations in rice and wheat, water requirement of crops,
technology to reduce kharif fallowing and better establishment of
rabi crops in rainfed black soils, minimum tillage in rice –wheat
system, popularization of ridge-furrow and RSB technology for kharif
crops in black soils. As Director Research he helped scientists to
release more than 50 varieties of different crops and two hybrid rice;
executed new projects on improving water productivity, tribal development,
seed production, varietal improvement, GM crops, soil testing, experiential
learning, SPS lab, integrated farming, post harvest processing / value
addition and secured two NAIP projects on “Integrated farming modules
for tribals” and “Animal Biotechnology” under component III and IV,
respectively at JNKVV, Jabalpur and two NAIP projects under component
III at RVSKVV, Gwalior from ICAR. He also established Biotechnology
Centre having advanced facilities and UNDP / ICAR Centre of Advanced
Studies in Soil Science, JNKVV, Jabalpur. He published more than 95
scientific papers in National and International journals, eight books
and manuals, more than 30 scientific popular articles and several
bulletins and other publications. He also has to his credit the planning
and establishment of College of Horticulture, Mandsaur; Colleges of
Agriculture, Tikamgarh and Ganjbasoda; and dryland horticulture research
centre and centre of vocational education in horticulture, Garhakota
(Sagar).
Recently under NAIP - Component III secured one project on "Sustainable rural livelihood in undulating and rainfed areas" and another one with CYMMIT on "Conservation Agriculture". Added two AICRPs on "Grapes" and "Maize" at College of Horticulture, Mandsaur and ZARS, Jhabua, respectively and project on moderniztion of agricultural university farms from ICAR.
He is recipient of Jawaharlal Nehru Award – 1974 (ICAR), Biennial BEST KVK AWARD – 2002 (ICAR) and Golden Jubilee Best Agri. Sci. Honour – 1997 (Govt. of MP) and Agriculture Scientist Honour – 2007 (State Bank of India). He was Councilor of Indian Society of Soil Science and Indian Society of Water Management. He is fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Indian Society of Soil Science.
Prof. Tomar has served
as Chairman of Editorial Board of JNKVV, Research Journal, Selection
Committees of ICAR and SAUs and has been invited to present lead /
scientific papers at 17 International Conferences and in several National
Conferences. He was invited to deliver Dr. R.V. Tamhane Memorial Lecture
by the Indian Society of Soil Science. He visited several countries
on various official assignments.
